French aristocrat Marquis de Custine has written about his travels and the social fabric of Russia. He seemed to respect the raw nature of the Russian character but reviled them for attempting to be otherwise. His most vitriolic criticisms are of the Russian aristocracy who he claims spend all their time imitating true sophistication.
