Description

"Geronimo's Story of His Life" by Apache War Chief Geronimo as taken down by Stephen M. Barrett, Superintendent of Education, Lawton Oklahoma is an autobiography by the legendary Apache Chief in his own words. Barrett had Geronimo's Apache words translated into English by another Apache, Asa Delugie, a close friend. of Geronimo. In this way Geronimo's words & meanings are genuine & not "interpreted" by a white man with his own agenda.

Geronimo 1829-1909 was a prominent leader of the Bedonkohe Apache who fought against Mexico and the United States for several decades during the Apache Wars because of their expansion into Apache tribal lands. Though outnumbered, Geronimo fought against both Mexican and United States troops from 1858 to 1886 and became famous for his daring exploits and numerous escapes from capture. At the end of his military career, he led a small band of 36 men, women, and children. They evaded thousands of Mexican and American troops for over a year, making him the most famous Native American of the time and earning him the title of the "worst Indian who ever lived" among the area's white settlers.

In this book Geronimo, in his own words, recounts the story of his exciting life as referenced above. He also relates some of the Apache laws, customs, & religious rituals making this a valuable first-hand, eyewitness account of Apache Tribal life. Readers can also decide for themselves if Geronimo was treated fairly by the government after his surrender or not.

A short book of 35,200+ words, and approximately 117+ pages at 300 words per page, it also contains the illustrations from the original. It is a must-read for those interested in the Apache Wars & the Native American life of the Southwest.

NOTE: This book has been scanned then OCR (Optical Character Recognition) has been applied to turn the scanned page images back into editable text. Then every effort has been made to correct typos, spelling, and to eliminate stray marks picked up by the OCR program. The original and/or extra period images, if any, were then placed in the appropriate place and, finally, the file was formatted for the e-book criteria of the site.
